SOLD OUT! Join us for the first session of our 2020 POPCORE urban orchardist training course. Workshop will provide a look at ecological orchard care through the seasons and focus on winter pruning of fruit trees, berry bushes, and fruiting vines. Morning classroom session will be followed by hands-on pruning at the FNC Poplar Farm orchard.

POPCORE 1: Pruning and Eco-Orchard Seasons - with POP staff

In-class Portion (11am-12:30pm) @ Ramonita G. de Rodriguez Library:

  • Annual orchard care timeline

  • Fruit tree pruning

  • Berry & bramble pruning

  • Fruiting vine pruning

Lunch (12:30-1pm) @ Ramonita G. de Rodriguez Library

Hands-on pruning (1pm-3pm) @ FNC Poplar Learning Farm

POPCORE combines many elements of orchard stewardship, ecosystem design, and food uses that POP has learned over the past ten years.  This four part series is intended to grow the knowledge, skillset, and self-reliance of our community orchard partners and volunteers, resulting in happier, healthier, and more productive community orchards.  

Those completing all four classes over any two year period will receive POPCORE Urban Orchardist Certification!

NOTE: Sliding scale prices available for POP Orchard Partners & Volunteers and PHS City Harvest members.  Childcare available if needed (please email info@phillyorchards.org). 

Accessibility: The classroom portion of this workshop will be held in a basement room of the library at 600 W. Girard which is accessible only via stairs- there is no elevator. 

Travel of 0.4 miles to the hands-on pruning session at 811 Poplar may involve use of poorly/moderately maintained city sidewalks. The terrain of FNC Poplar Farm includes uneven surfaces, and activities during the training session may include standing, stretching, climbing ladder, and operating hand saws, pruners, or other sharp tools.
