The Hawthorne Tree: Heart Medicine, Folklore, & Community Healing

Registration is closed for this event
Join the Philly Herb Hub in processing Hawthorne berries into medicinal honey.

Learn about the medicinal benefits, identification and folklore that surrounds the Hawthorn tree. This thorny Guardian is a heart health hero with a sweetness that tastes like an autumn day. Using folk herbalism practices, we will process this powerful cardioprotective into a ruby medicinal syrup that provides support for long-lasting heart health.

All honey made at the workshop will be donated to the Philly Herb Hub - a free community apothecary, currently available to Black folks in Philly. Through a growing mutual aid network of  local growers, medicine makers, and herb enthusiasts, Philly Herb Hub is able to provide herbs and workshops free of charge.

Yaya Vallis (they/them) is a Philly Herb Hub herbalist and educator who is committed to building and imagining a future that centers food/medicine sovereignty, autonomous self-liberation, and deep ancestral healing. They are a generational herbalist who specializes in medicinal honey and skincare.

    Agenda:

    • Pick Berries: Pick and rinse berries

    • Decoct Berries: Simmer Berries in water for 30 mins.

    • Sieve Berries: Wearing gloves, volunteers will hand puree—mush the berries gently through the sieves. This is a time consuming process as you do not want to break the seeds.

    • Combine with Honey: 1 part honey to 4 parts berry purée

    If time allows

    • Bottle Honey: Pour into jars

    • Label Bottles: Sticker honey with dosage info

*Volunteers can start at any of the different stages. Yaya will prep one batch of berries in advance at the various stages.
